Introduction
The members of the Institution shall consist of four classes, namely, Fellows,
Members, Associates and Honorary Fellows; and there shall be classes of Graduate
Members, Probationers and Students attached to the Institution.
Membership of the Institution shall be open to both sexes.
Fellows
Every Fellow shall be more than thirty-five years of age, shall have acquired
a practical knowledge of surveying in one or other of its branches and shall
have had not less than five years professional experience after being elected
as a member of the Institution.
No person shall be eligible for transfer to the Fellowship unless he shall have
passed the examination or examinations required for election to that class under
the Rules of Examination, or such other examination or examinations accepted
by the Council in lieu thereof.
Every Fellow shall be eligible for election to the Council, for election or
appointment to all offices of the Institution, and shall be entitled to all
its rights and privileges.
Members
Every Member shall be more than twenty-one years of age and shall have acquired
a practical knowledge of surveying in one or other of its branches.
No person shall be eligible as a Member who shall not have passed the examinations
required for election to that class under the Rules of Examination, or such
other examination or examinations accepted by the Council in lieu thereof.
Members shall not be eligible for the office of President or Vice-President
but, subject to the Bye-laws and regulations of the Council, shall be eligible
for election or appointment to other offices of the Institution, and shall be
entitled to all its rights and privileges.
DESIGNATIONS
The designation of members by distinguishing initials or words shall be as follows:-
Every Fellow shall be entitled to use after his name the initials F.l.S.M.,
(i.e. Fellow of the Institution of Surveyors, Malaysia).
Every Member shall be entitled to use after his name the initials M.l.S.M.,
(i.e. Member of the Institution Surveyors, Malaysia).
Every Past President shall be entitled to use after his name the initials P.P.l.S.M.,
(i.e. Past President of the Institution of Surveyors, Malaysia).
Associates
Any person from time to time who is not a surveyor by profession but one who,
by reason of his pursuits, has made a significant contribution to the advancement
of knowledge in the surveying profession shall be eligible for election as an
Associate.
Associates shall be entitled to all rights and privileges of the Institution
except that they shall not be eligible to hold any office of the Institution
nor have any rights of voting.
Honorary Fellows
Every Honorary Fellow shall be a person who by reason either of his position
or experience, or of his eminence in science, may be enabled to render
assistance
in promoting the objects of the Institution but who is not engaged in practice
as a surveyor in Malaysia. An Honorary Fellow shall not be entitled to be present
at or take part in any Extraordinary General Meeting but he shall have the privilege
of being present at and taking part in all Annual and Ordinary General Meetings
and of access to the Library. He shall have no right of voting, discussing,
or otherwise intervening in the affairs of the Institution, nor shall he be
called upon to contribute to its funds.
ATTACHED CLASSES
Graduate Members, Probationers and Students
Graduate Members shall be persons who have passed the Final Examination or such
other examination, if any, as may be accepted by the Council in lieu thereof;
and who have yet to acquire a practical knowledge in surveying in one or other
of its branches.
Probationers shall be persons who have passed the Intermediate Examination,
or such other examination, if any, as may be accepted by the Council in lieu
thereof; and such a person may continue as a Probationer until the end of the
fifth calendar year after that in which he has passed such examination; provided
always that the Council shall have power to vary the period of probation either
generally or in the case of particular persons.
Students shall be persons not under seventeen years of age who are or have been
undergoing suitable practical training and instruction approved by the Council
as pupils or assistants or who are studying with a view to entering the profession
at such places of professional instruction as the Council may approve; and such
persons may continue as Students until they have passed the Intermediate Examination
or such other examination, if any, as may be accepted by the Council in lieu
thereof or until the end of the fifth calendar year from the date upon which
they shall have been enrolled into the class whichever happens first; provided
always that the Council shall have power to vary the period of studentship either
generally or in the case of particular persons.
For this route candidates must have the following:-
1) Have a degree now accredited by RICS. (Currently UiTMARA QS/BS and UM QS,Estate Management degrees are RICS recognised.)
2) Be a member of a professional body approved by RICS (ISM is now one of such bodies)
3) Have more than 2 years experience post graduation.
